I think you should cut the kids' wages to 1/3 of pre-firing levels. When they ask why, tell them you got competing proposals from both some illegal immigrants and an outsourcing firm in Mumbai.

My daughter is turning 2 next week, so she's a little young yet for this. But I LOVE this idea! Fabulous!

Been there with that battle. Actually my five all have chores that they have been assigned to help out around the house. They don't get paid for them, but we have a list of things that they can do to get paid and a dollar amount next to them, so they can figure out how many things they would need to do to get what they want.

I hope I have the same fiscal fist with my kids as they get old enough to pitch in. Hubby and I have debated how to handle allowances once the kiddos are old enough to understand (DS is only 18 months so we have some time!) I'm going to let him read your posts for inspiration :)

I'm not there yet but I dread the day when I have to force my kids to take on responsibility. I gave my mom so much crap growing up because she was so "hard" on me but now that I've turned out to be an independent adult, I can see why she pushed so hard to get me here and can appreciate it. You better believe my kids will be doing chores when they're old enough. Keep on them!

So far, it's just a threat. If I do actually fire them, then I would probably accept proposals from them for new jobs after a few weeks. Savings goals are great motivators. Unfortunately, the long-term "car" goal seems to be too far off to spur our kids' motivation.

Sadly, I can completely relate. I never thought to "fire" him from his chores though. Will you interview them for future chores? I am intrigued...can't wait to hear what happens.

The one thing I don't agree on with the article is their push for the financial classes in the schools. In an ideal world, it would be great for the school system to provide a real word education on finance, but why should the education be limited to just what the school can provide? As the article said, "One of the biggest hurdles in the effort to bring business into the classroom is that there’s just not enough time in the day or room in the budget to do it."

I think more parents need to be educated on finance and how to make a reasonable budget so that they can pass the education onto their children. The classroom setting could be used to enhance that education, not be the sole source of it. In my opinion, if they aren't going to practice it outside of the classroom, they won't care about learning it.
